When you’re bored, don’t be an idle bum;
Don’t sniff coke or sip some rum.
Don’t hang around, dead-brained on Facebook;
Or stand by on Twitter, with hashtags and… links to Facebook. (lol)
9Gag’s a tease that puts your brain on a leash,
yet blows your time away into the breeze.
YouTube is nice when it’s fun and educational,
not when you watch hand-washing on urinals.
And please, less vain photos – we’ve had enough of that;
We’d rather see your face covered by a hat.
Too much edits of flowers and suns,
of sexy ladies with their hips and their buns.
Too many posts about partying all night,
or cats and their endless grammatical plight.
Too much of “That moment when…” – oh hell, chicken hen!
You might wanna try a journal and a pen.
Try poking your face into a good book
that isn’t about vampires or teen drama or looks.
Try listening to music that’s out of the mainstream,
you’d be delighted by finding the crop’s cream.
Try setting your fingers on a musical instrument
instead of a mouse that’s clicking and bent.
Try watching a film from the 50’s or 60’s
or even go back to finding hidden Mickeys.
Go act in a play or spend time on the beach,
Anywhere far from the screen’s reach.
There’s more to say but this is getting long,
for a poem supposedly short but strong.
Excuse the lame rhymes and inadequate measures
from some dude who enjoys the simplest of pleasures.
Don’t mind me, I’m just like you
Killing my boredom just like the flu.
Before I end, allow me to say
That there’s more to life than screenshots and “cray.”
Time is important and while we’re still young,
discover the world so outwardly flung!
So get off your butt and make something happen
like building a spaceship or climbing a mountain.
Get on with your life; make it worth your while
The glory is yours if you go the mile.
I love this poem so much because it speaks of reality. People who sit down idle and lingering the numbness of their butts, the countless hours spent in front of the screens–phones, computers, tablets..you name it we have it. You, know what I mean.
Get out and keep active!
Have a fun summer!
